FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
POW Bergdahl now Liberty Day Parade Marshall
June 21, 2011 – For Immediate Release
Boise’s 4th of July Parade, organized by the local “We the People Liberty Day Parade” committee, is making a statement with a tradition-breaking parade marshal appointment.
The first parade marshal is recently-promoted Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, a native of Idaho and high-profile POW held by Taliban forces. The appointment was inspired by schoolmate Elysse Barrett, who was also Bowe’s childhood friend. ”I have warm memories of growing up with Bowe, and can’t imagine what he must be going through. I pray often for his safe return.” Bob and Jani Bergdahl, Bowe’s parents approved of the appointment, because they hope it will draw attention to their son’s captivity. Bowe’s parents request a moment of prayer, as an empty parade marshal’s vehicle passes first along the parade route. They also ask all Idahoans to write letters in support of Bowe’s release.
The second parade marshal is a prominent local businessman, Larry Knapp. He runs and operates 3K Ranch and Event Center in Star, as well as real estate development and investing. Mr. Knapp served in Vietnam and is a respected local philanthropist. His charitable giving has been especially helpful to crisis pregnancy centers for young women. Mr. Knapp is also the National Director of the International Fellowship of Christian Businessmen where he mentors young business owners.
A $100 cash prize will be given to the float most representative of this year’s theme, “Stand for Liberty”. The float entry deadline has been extended to Monday, June 27th.
